Exposures of Upper Clare Shale in the cliffs just south west of Bromore West in Co Kerry. These Upper Carboniferous (Namurian) outcrops are north of Ballybunion but best seen from the Shannon Estuary. The shales represent a change in depositional setting from the underlying Dinantian shallow shelf carbonates to the influx of siliciclastics that upward change to turbidites to deltaic sediments (Lewarne, 1959; Brennand, 1965; Rider, 1969, and Martinsen, 1989).

Tullig Formation channel migration expressed by sorted quartz rich sands of Upper Carboniferous or Namurian age. These sands were sorted and winnowed by waves that impinged the delta front and filled distributary channels and/or proximal bar sands (Andy Pulham personal communication and Martinsen et al., 2008).
