Okefenokee Swamps

Depositional Setting of the Okefenokee Swamp

Introduction

This part of the site is designed to allow geologists to understand the processes at work in a modern warm temperate swamp, the Okefenokee Swamp of southeastern Georgia and northeastern Florida.

The descriptions provided here are based on the field observations made in the swamp over the years by Professor Art Cohen. This is one of the most easily accessible and most thoroughly studied Holocene cypress swamp marsh complexes of the world. The peats of this region accumulated during the Late Holocene in, responding to changing sea level, productivity and climate.

Most of the materials and text used on this site are based on the publications and the compendium of information assembled by Dr. Art Cohen, his colleagues and his students. Many of the maps and diagrams presented in the attached gallery are from the publications linked to the page and were drafted by Dr. Cohen. The suite of digital photographs were taken by Christopher Kendall during field trips, when Art kindly showed him the swamp and exchanged ideas with him!!
